About Us

Nelson Bays Maternity Unit -Te Whare Whanau is an independently Certified Maternity Unit (Ministry of Health) and is 'Baby Friendly' Certified. Certification is a rigorous, ongoing assessment of safety and quality. Motueka Maternity has continued to perform very well.

As an independent service, we are able to provide flexible care to suit each individual family's need.

Everything we do is to help women and their families feel comfortable and confident, to enjoy their special time together, giving birth and in those first few precious days.

Dads and children need peaceful, unhurried time together with mother and baby...Nelson Bays Maternity's comfortable environment helps to let bonding work its magic.

Why is this SO important?

Research in New Zealand is telling us that primary units are safe places with good outcomes, for those women and babies with low risk.

The hospital environment can impact on women and research tells us that anxiety and tension affect labour, birth, breastfeeding and bonding...that's all about the hormone oxytocin.

History:

In 2004, many small maternity units around the country had closed their doors. Two local midwives undertook to continue to provide the service, under contract to Nelson Marborough District Health Board.

"We wanted to provide a high quality professional service, bringing togther a homely relaxing environment, with the very best of modern midwifery practices", says founding director, Kirsty Rance.

Since 2004,  Nelson Bays Maternity has been entirely led and staffed by experienced midwives. Midwives are the specialists in normal birth and we are one of very few units around New Zealand still staffed exclusively by midwives.

The Importance of Teamwork

Nelson Bays Maternity Unit provides an excellent environment for midwives, as well as for clients. We are committed to working as a team, LMCs and staff midwives working together to provide you with the very best of care.
